Sarah's Turnip
I love the colour or these ugly earthy turnips, my friend Sarah gave two to me last week and I said then that I would paint one. I hope I've done justice to the purples, pinks and reds on the skin, and the creamy underside, such delicate colours against the crusty earthy-ness of the rest of the plant. They are a much overlooked vegetable but surely one of the prettiest! I'll be growing some next year

Garage Mounier
This is Garage Mounier on the way up to Rochechouart, they helped me out a few weeks ago when I had locked my keys in the car while in town, it took them ten minutes to lever the car door open and for that I was charged €45! Oh well my mistake.
I really like this painting, I was excited by all the colours and strong composition, for such a small format it was quite difficult to handle all that was going on. For me its not about the garage but the shapes and colours and how they all work together.

Autumn at the Pond
Late afternoon near St Mathieu I had to stop the car and photograph this pond. The sun was casting a deep orange glow over the whole area, the pond was alive with insects and was perfectly still, no breeze, all was calm and peaceful except the two crows beating up the buzzard above the trees in the distance.

The Gate to the Potager

The gate here leads into the largest and most interesting, the guy who tends it when he's not working in it just sits amongst the plants enjoying just being there. Don't blame him a very calm peaceful place. I painted the view from the other side a few months ago, see it here. |

Jemima
A bit off the wall colour-wise with this but I think it works fine, it kind of reflects the personality of her in a way, that is exuberant and full of fun!

Apple and Bread
Went to Limoges yesterday (sunday) I'd heard there was a big Flea Market near the cathederal. Lots of stalls along the streets and alleyways selling everything from ancient coffee grinders to plastic micky mouse telephones. I was in search of interesting things to include in still lives and found a green jug...it will appear later this week. The trees are turning golden now and there promises to be a spectacular display of Autumn colour again this year, I'll have to be on top of my game to do it any kind of justice.
But today an apple from the market and bread from the village

The Old Town House
This lovely grand old Maison sits behind the main square in my local town of Rochechouart, crumbling and in a slow state of decay it's full of character and charm. As I was painting this little dog came past and spent a few minutes sniffing around the yard before moving on. Later an old man came out with a shopping basket and walked off towards the square. |
