Field of Cosmos

Field of Cosmos. Oil. SOLD

On the way back from my French lesson I took a slight detour and found a wonderful display of Cosmos just growing randomly all over a small field the other side of Vayres, it didnt look like the house in the distance had anything to do with it, maybe they were growing wild. I wanted to venture further into it but there is a danger that snakes may be present so managed to find this view from the corner of the field.

Sheltered Doorway

No this isn't the little buillding where I found the dusty wine bottle from yesterday, but the corner of an old barn in the village. It's not that clear on the image but below the window one can see the outlet for the ancient sink, which, if you have one in your newly aquired cottage you have to keep as it's a heritage item that should be preserved. For the painting I was interested in the crumbly-ness of the building, the textures of the wall and the fact that there were no straight lines anywhere! The late sunlight was just coming around the corner and catching the leaves and grass as it did so. Executed faily quickly and with loose brushwork, I dont usually draw out what I am about to paint, but get on with it with the brush, I don't want to lose any of the spontaneity of the moment.

Two Green Bottles

I came across an old abandoned building during a long walk in the woods the other day, there was only one room with a fireplace and a cooker, the really old enamel kind. Detritus along the top of the mantle shelf and dust everywhere. The time of day was just right so the sunlight did just enough to illuminate the bottles and cast a beautiful stained glass window effect on the wall behind.

There ws something still in the wine bottle but I wasn't tempted!

Un Café et un Thé

I went to the Flea market/ Brocant at Limoges the other day, near to the Cathederal and stalls everywhere, plenty of places to eat and enjoy a coffee... or tea! I had to resist buying a bundle of stuff but I did find an old green jug I mentioned in a previous post. This painting is from a photo taken next to one of the market stalls.  I like the ordinary-ness of it, just a typical image at the market, the stall and its owner were bathed in a golden yellow light as the sun shone through the yellow canopy.

Sarah's Turnip

I love the colour or these ugly earthy turnips, my friend Sarah gave two to me last week and I said then that I would paint one. I hope I've done justice to the purples, pinks and reds on the skin, and the creamy underside, such delicate colours against the crusty earthy-ness of the rest of the plant. They are a much overlooked vegetable but surely one of the prettiest!  I'll be growing some next year

Garage Mounier

This is Garage Mounier on the way up to Rochechouart, they helped me out  a few weeks ago when I had locked my keys in the car while in town, it took them ten minutes to lever the car door open and for that I was charged €45!  Oh well my mistake.

I really like this painting, I was excited by all the colours and strong composition, for such a small format it was quite difficult to handle all that was going on. For me its not about the garage but the shapes and colours and how they all work together.

Autumn at the Pond

Late afternoon near St Mathieu I had to stop the car and photograph this pond. The sun was casting a deep orange glow over the whole area, the pond was alive with insects and was perfectly still, no breeze, all was calm and peaceful except the two crows beating up the buzzard above the trees in the distance.

Just on the edge of Rochechouart lies this old farm partly hidden by a wood. While I was painting a few of the beautiful Limousin cattle came over to investigate, led by the bull, who was a splendid specimen! He stood in front of me for a few minutes and realising I was no threat wandered off to sit in the shade. Dogs barking in the farmyard frustrated that they couldnt come and chase me away and the farmer working in the field, and idyllic life in the Limousin...

Just along the road from my village is Grand Meynieux, a very old farming community, most of the inhabitants are retired but they keep wonderful vegetabale gardens or potagers. The gate here leads into the largest and most interesting, the guy who tends it when he's not working in it just sits amongst the plants enjoying just being there. Don't blame him a very calm peaceful place. I painted the view from the other side a few months ago, see it here.

Jemima

A bit off the wall colour-wise with this but I think it works fine, it kind of reflects the personality of her in a way, that is exuberant and full of fun!

Apple and Bread

Went to Limoges yesterday (sunday) I'd heard there was a big Flea Market near the cathederal. Lots of stalls along the streets and alleyways selling everything from ancient coffee grinders to plastic micky mouse telephones. I was in search of interesting things to include in still lives and found a green jug...it will appear later this week. The trees are turning golden now and there promises to be a spectacular display of Autumn colour again this year, I'll have to be on top of my game to do it any kind of justice.

But today an apple from the market and bread from the village

The Old Town House

This lovely grand old Maison sits behind the main square in my local town of Rochechouart, crumbling and in a slow state of decay it's full of character and charm. As I was painting this little dog came past and spent a few minutes sniffing around the yard before moving on.  Later an old man came out with a shopping basket and walked off towards the square.

The lane leading to Grand Meyniuex, beautiful that everything was tinged with warm orange. The barn on the left and the first doorway houses the rabbits for the table!
