Hope to see you this week.  We are open daily, 10 am to 5pm at Swacliffe Village Hall, near Banbury, Oxfordshire OX15 5EQ, until Mon 27 May.

Evening over the Oxford canal

Oil on board

As a young lad I used to come down to this canal with my fishing rod, and high expectations.  I do the same now - with different expectations!

Moored up in Lower Heyford

Enjoyed a couple of hours painting in the garden of this lovely cafe next to the canal.  I always like the chatter with people and was very grateful for the free cuppa from the proprietor.

The end result!

Sunshine on the plot

This is my nearby allotments - the sun was bursting through the glass on the greenhouse but didn't last for long so I had to work really fast and finish off in the studio... A dangerous thing to do!

To the ford and back

As I was painting this, an old guy came past and paddled in the fast-flowing ford before marching up the hill.  I know that he lives about two miles from that spot, so a round trip of about four.  I was impressed.

Chastleton House

Oil on board
What a lovely old building!  I must have a root around inside sometime.

29 March 2019

Gorgeous afternoon in Lymington yesterday.  A couple of hours painting the boats after the inevitable fish and chips! Yum!

'Two Pears'

I must do more stilllifes!

'Fishing at Somerton'

Spring morning beside this lovely spot. Nattered to the fisherman about what might be caught in the canal now - apparently trout in this section. A bit different to when I was a lad - all you could hope for was gudgeon and shopping trolleys!

Once I'd finished I sat on the warm grass and enjoyed a picnic lunch...lovely!

Beside the Oxford Canal in Somerton

Had a good day in Somerton yesterday, beside the Oxford Canal.  Met some nice folks fishing there too before setting off to several other places to do more plein air painting.

'At the bottom of the garden'

Oil on board
10 x 8 inches

I can't work for very long without feeling the urge to visit the allotments or interesting local gardens...if there's a shed nearby, then I'm not far away.

'Approach to Epwell'

Oil on board, 10 x 14 inches.
Out and about painting in the lanes around my village.

This is the second time I've painted scenes of the approach to the pretty north Oxfordshire village of Epwell.  Here's my earlier version.

'Two Shire Horses'

This week's demo for my oil painting class.  I'd been a little reluctant to use this because I considered it to be a bit too difficult for the class.  I was wrong!
'Good to be out of my comfort zone', was mentioned more than once!

Oil 10 x 8 inches

Anyway this is the demo I'd worked on before we started.

'Heythrop Church in the rain'

The Church of St Nicholas, Heythrop.  Several miles east of Chipping Norton.

'The old silos at Folly Farm'

We've had the warmest February on record here in the UK.  This is more like it should look in the depths of winter and how we were fixed this time last year.

I've used a limited palette to reflect the winter atmosphere.

'Evening reflection in Newquay'

Whether it's a rowing boat, a fishing trawler or a ship, I find that these are frequent subjects which I love to paint.

'Fishing boats in Hastings'

We are an island nation in the UK and so there are lots of opportunities to engage with the sea.  And also to paint scenes of those who live and work beside it and on it.

This is a view of the beach at Hastings on the south coast of England.

'Trawler in Wells-next-the-Sea'

Painting en plein air in Norfolk a few months ago.
Oil on board, 10 x 8"
